Change 'Keyword' search option to 'Parameter' ?

Nov 19, 2011 at 5:51 PM

It has been suggested by the user group that the search 'Keywords' option is renamed to 'Parameter'

Reason is, that 'Keyword' could refer to any of the search criteria (area, data source, data type...) while 'Parameter' is more associated with variable name.

Another suggestion was to change 'Keywords' to 'Variables' (this is inaccurate with respect to CUAHSI concept ontology, where only the 'leaf concepts' are equivalent to HIS controlled vocabulary variable names)

Please post here any comments and ideas how to best name the 'Keyword' search option to make it intuitive for new users!

I suggest "Term" or "Search term".  Variable and Parameter are a bit too specific because we need to be moving towards where search is across multiple facets and "Search term" would cover all these.  We could also consider an unlabeled box with the search icon "microscope" that is used by Google, Bing and others.

In the current version of HydroDesktop, it is still Keyword.

I think the decision depends upon how the search works.

If it only looks in a limited finite list, "Keyword" or "Search Term" should not be used, but a specific word like parameter which represents what is this list of finite terms.

How do these words match to the actual VariableName in the controlled vocabulary/ontology?

Is someone behind the green curtain creating synonyms? How are they going to keep up with all synonyms and avoid confusing the user who might worry that if they don’t pick all forms of nitrate listed, e.g., they will miss getting some data? (That is what I would do!)

The keyword searching tool deserves some discussion very soon.

In version 1.6 we will replace the word "Keyword" with "Search Term"
