HydroDesktop & Local WOF Service

Oct 29, 2010 at 7:56 PM

Hello,

I've been tinkering around with HydroDesktop for the last few hours and I am trying to get it to work with our local WOF services.  I have managed to edit the xml files so that our service shows up in the 'Web Services' section of the options tab, but since it isn't registered with HIS Central I don't have some of the required information (i.e. ServiceID, ServiceDescriptionURL).  I have toyed around a little with it and entered some placeholder information for those fields, but our web services aren't getting hit when I run a query (I imagine that this is all part of the same dependency tree).  Before I invest a large amount of time going through source code, I thought I'd check here to see if this is even plausible without a major overhaul/customization of the application for our needs.  In short, my questions are:

  1. Can we run hydrodesktop against a local (unregistered with HIS Central) WOF service?
    1. If so, what steps do I need to take to make this happen?

Thank you for your time,

Hello,

Unfortunately the current release of HydroDesktop doesn't support search from local WOF services which are not registered at HIS Central.

This feature is currently not working because the HydroDesktop search interface requires the keyword ontology tree and the keywords are only available from HIS Central. It used to work in the early version of HydroDesktop but it has been temporarily discontinued because of the 'keyword' problem.

To make this feature work in HydroDesktop, two steps are required:

1. Go to Table .. Manage Metadata and enter the URL of the local web service. This will register the sites, variables and series in a local MetadataCache.sqlite database which

is supplied with HydroDesktop

2. Modify the "Search2" plugin (code is in source/plugins/Search2) to support searching against a local (unregistered with HIS Central) WOF service.

This means, that some customization of the HydroDesktop Search2 plugin source code and user interface is required to make this happen.

Thanks & Regards,

Jiri Kadlec

Jiri,

I took care of the first step when I was tinkering around earlier, I'll take a look into the Search2 plugin and see what I can come up with.

Thank  you!

Matt

Hi,

Using HydroDesktop 1.1.390.1

I have the same issue "to get it to work with our local WOF services".

I can't find the Table .. Manage Metadata menu.

Is there a workaround to "to get it to work with our local WOF services" ?

Hi Thierry,

The official version HydroDesktop 1.1.390.1 does not work with local WOF services.
We are preparing a new version HydroDesktop 1.2 beta release, which will fully support local WOF services.
This new release (1.2 beta) will be made available on hydroDesktop.codeplex.com website next week. I will let you know when it is ready.

As a workaround, before 1.2 beta release is ready, you may download the source code and build HydroDesktop from code
(instructions are on http://hydrodesktop.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Getting HydroDesktop). and run the table .. Manage Metadata
option from hydrodesktop.exe built from the source code.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

You can grab the artifact from the automated build system:

Specifically:
http://hydro10.sdsc.edu:88/repository/download/bt2/4042:id/HydroDesktop_Installer_Beta_1.2.448.0.exe

Hi,

I have donwloaded the HydroDesktop Beta Release ( HydroDesktop_Installer_Beta_1.2.448.0.exe ).

And I went to the table/meta qnd I have added a new WOF service. It was http://192.168.0.60/LBR/cuahsi_1_1.asmx?WSDL(and I also try different flavors such as lowercase, without the trailing "?WSDL", and also the "cuahsi_1_0.asmx".

And when I wanted to update the metada cache (download metadata), the software try to download the site list, hang a few minutes, and after I got an error Window ( )...

I checked from a web browser that  http://192.168.0.60/LBR/cuahsi_1_1.asmx?WSDL is working, as weel as the test database page ( http://192.168.0.60/LBR/DatabaseTest.aspx ). And I had a look at the IIS log file.

So, from the server side, and from a web browser, there is no problem.

Hi,

I have the same issue when I set the URL to http://water.sdsc.edu/wateroneflow/DAYMET/Service.asmx?WSDL or http://water.sdsc.edu/wateroneflow/NWIS/Data.asmx?WSDL  .

Something is going through the network (cf. Windows Tak Manager, Networking tab), but at the end, the same error message.

It's no an emergency, I can waitfor the next release.

For your information only.

Best regards,

Hi,

The URL http://water.sdsc.edu/wateroneflow/DAYMET/Service.asmx?WSDL doesn't work with HydroDesktop because it doesn't fully support the GetSites web method.

You can use HydroDesktop 1.2.475 Beta release and test the local service: http://drought.usu.edu/snotel/cuahsi_1_1.asmx
